This includes the scale of the work and a rough estimate of the fabric needed. Once the works are agreed a more thorough fabric calculation can be made when the piece is on the bench. Digital layouts are created to visualise how best to map out panels, maximising the use of the fabric and reducing waste

Sävy has several high quality fabric suppliers, each offering a unique selection of fabrics to meet all budgets. Harnessing our expertise in creating colour palettes, moodboards and cohesive schemes, we can guide you through the minefield of patterns, fibres and compositions to find a fabric that meets your desired aesthetic and use.
NOTE : Upholstering with patterned fabric incurs additional cost due to increased time and complexities when pattern matching.
-
Before any reupholstery can take place, each staple is lifted, each layer removed. During this phase we can assess the structural integrity of the frame and the state of the filling material. When reupholstering, time is taken to retain the original look and aesthetic of the piece, being sympathetic to the original construction and techniques used.

Safety is paramount and in order to meet stringent fire safety codes we need to ensure the fabric is suitable for upholstery. There are three ways in which fabrics can meet fire regulations:
Inherent fire retardancy - Fabrics that are 100% wool, along with some other fabrics made from 100% natural fibres, are inherently fire retardant. This means they require no further treatment to bring them up to standard. They are an upholsterer’s dream to work with as the have natural stretch in the fibres and are therefore easier to manipulate and are well suited to most upholstery projects.
FR treatment - Most manmade fabrics (and some mixed fibre fabrics) require a fire retardant coating to bring them up to safety code. This treatment sees the application of chemicals to the reverse of the fabric that acts as a fire stop.
Use of a interliner/barrier cloth -In some instances, fabrics that have a mixed composite of fibres (mainly natural) can reach fire code when used in conjunction with a wool barrier cloth. This means that the piece is upholstered twice (first with the barrier cloth and second with the cover fabric), which adds additional time and cost into the process. This is a more natural/eco alternative to FR treatments.
